As we struggle through these incredibly difficult times, I would like to take the opportunity on this day of renewal and hope to express my gratitude to all who have helped combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thank you to those on the front lines: doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists providing direct care for those afflicted. Thank you to the pharmacists, the lab technicians, transport workers, hospital receptionists, housekeepers, police, and security officers, and first responders.
Thank you to the scientists and researchers working tirelessly behind the scenes to develop effective new treatment protocols, prevention measures, and vaccines.
As an OBGYN and a mother, I know how hard it has been for new moms to stay home with young ones all day, to not have the direct support of their relatives, babysitters, teachers, and friends.
People around the world are struggling with social isolation, especially those whose mental health is particularly affected by not being able to leave their houses and socialize with others. My heart goes out to those trying to stay healthy and positive while battling depression, substance abuse disorders, and other mental health conditions. Thank you to the professionals and counselors who have reached out to others to provide virtual support, compassion, and education about healthy coping mechanisms.
This pandemic has exposed glaring flaws in the system. We are seeing how drastically people of color, and low-income communities are affected by healthcare inequities. This must be a catalyst for change.
In the meantime, it is inspiring to see the community come together to help those in need...whether it be by volunteering time, money, equipment, food, virtual activities, or professional care. Continue to social distance because you care about your community, and let us come out of this stronger than we went in.
